■Content Our reporting team visited Dassen Island in the Republic of South Africa. This 12-kilometer island is a national nature reserve and the largest breeding ground for African penguins. Here, penguins build underground nests to protect their eggs from predatory seagulls, which prey on their eggs. Two chicks, covered in dark gray down, appeared to be newborns, as they hadn't yet opened their eyes. However, mother seemed strange. Her body was dirty, insects swarmed around her eyes, and she looked exhausted. Apparently, father, who was supposed to take turns raising the chicks, had been away from the nest for days... If this continued, both mother and chicks would weaken. Mother's body was worn down and listless... Mother remained motionless, huddled in a ball. Beneath her body, the chicks also began to lose their energy. Father didn't show up that evening, and the next morning came... Mother had disappeared from the nest!? What on earth had happened?
