When I started buying land, it was very cheap by today's standards, but at the same time, I didn't have any money so it didn't really matter. How I built my original Dream Farm would still work today, but there are a few things that are different, most notably, there is less margin for error. You can't afford to get off to the wrong start or you will be done before you even get started. Here is how I would do it today.
