Edaville Railroad: Winter Photo Freight [HD]
For the first time since 1991, The Edaville Railroad hosted a photo freight charter on the cold winter morning on December 22nd, 2024. The stars of the show are Monson #3 and Edaville’s own #11. 3 pulled 4 interesting freight cars (3 flat cars and one hopper) originally came from South Africa and was recently shipped to Edaville (along with a few more hopper cars now at the WW&F Railway for mow trains). While 11 pulled the regular train, carrying photographers to each location for the runbys. #3 is a 0-4-4T forney steam locomotive built by the Vulcan Company in 1913 for the Monson Railroad up in Maine. After the railroad’s closure, she was purchased by Ellis D. Atwood along with her sister engine #4 for his railroad (Edaville) and was used to take tourists around the cranberry bogs. However, the railroad ceased operations and #3, along with the rest of the equipment were purchased by the newly formed Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum in Portland, Maine. Today, #3 is currently leased to Edaville for use on their trains. #11 is originally a 0-4-0T saddle tank steam locomotive built by the H.K. Porter Company for the Raritan Copper Works in New Jersey in 1925. It was retired by the 1950s and was purchased by Nelson Blount who owned Edaville at that time and was on public display. Many people who have been to Edaville during the good old days will remember climbing on her. This all changed when Edaville was in need of another steam engine to work with #21 (currently out of service). 11 was shipped to the Boothbay Railway Village where Brian Fanslau and his team restored 11 as a tender engine. During the restoration it received a new cab, a boiler jacket since the saddle tank that used to be on top of the boiler is gone, and was regauged from 3ft to 2ft. 11 went into service in late 2013 and has been pulling trains ever since.
