El Torito Serrano de San Pablo Macuiltianguis (Reedición 2021)

The Torito Serrano is a traditional and original dance practiced in the indigenous community of San Pablo Macuiltianguis. It dates back to the late colonial period, when a priest created it to attract people to church. This is the only known record and version of its origin. The dance simulates a bullfight, with the man playing the role of a bullfighter and the woman embodying the untamed ferocity of a wild bull. Refrains are sung between the musical sections, closely related to the dance. It is customary to perform the dance at the end of local festivities or to bid farewell to children as they are taken to their final resting place.
