Eastern Turkey sits on one of the most complex and historically layered borderlands in the region, where Armenian, Persian, Ottoman, and Russian histories overlap in the same landscape. This road trip begins in Armenia, moving through Georgia and into Eastern Turkey, following a route shaped by empires, religion, and centuries of cultural conflict and exchange. Along the way, we explore the ruins of the so-called Devil’s Castle near the Georgian-Turkish border, a remote fortress surrounded by mystery and local legend. In Kars, a city that has changed hands multiple times throughout history, we visit its layered landmarks: the Fethiye Mosque, the Kars Cathedral, and the massive Kars Fortress built during the Bagratid Armenian period and later modified by different empires. The journey continues to Doğubayazıt, where the Ishak Pasha Palace rises above the landscape, blending Ottoman, Persian, and regional architectural traditions into one of the most visually striking palaces in Anatolia. Throughout the route, Mount Ararat dominates the horizon, a mountain deeply tied to regional mythology, identity, and history. We also enter Kurdish villages along the road, where local life continues far from the main tourist routes, offering a direct look at everyday culture in the region. This is more than a road trip.
