Opposition Leader Meets 7 MV Barima Survivors

On July 25, 2026, the Leader of the Opposition, Azruddin Mohamed, and his team met with seven survivors of the MV Barima tragedy in Port Kaituma to hear their firsthand accounts of one of the darkest days in Guyana's history. The MV Barima was travelling from Georgetown to Port Kaituma on July 18, 2026, when tragedy struck off the Essequibo Coast. In this emotional discussion, the survivors recount the terrifying moments as the vessel began taking on water, the desperate struggle to survive in the Atlantic for hours before rescue; and the heartbreaking loss of family members, friends, and personal belongings. Several survivors also describe the challenges they say they faced after being rescued, including the loss of essential belongings, the emotional trauma of the disaster, and what they believe was inadequate psychosocial support in the days that followed. They also speak about the lasting impact the tragedy has had on their families and communities. Listening to these testimonies on the ground provided a deeper understanding of the hardships faced by ordinary Guyanese in Region One.
