The rag doll has been a traditional toy of the Russian people since ancient times. Folk dolls are part of Russian culture, part of history. Dolls appeared in Rus' a very long time ago. In those ancient times, when there were no telephones or computers, our great-grandmothers would store rags and old clothes in chests. In the evenings, grandchildren would ask their grandmothers to tell them a story. A handmade doll complemented the story perfectly. Beautiful scraps, ribbons, and laces were specially set aside for its creation. Since fabrics in ancient times weren't as varied as they are today, every scrap was worth its weight in gold. Dolls made with your own hands from scrap materials were believed to possess a special energy, as a piece of the soul of the artisan who made them was imbued into them.
