3 Days in Oaxaca
Visiting OAXACA is always a great idea. There’s so much to do that one always leaves needing more days, more meals, more space to transport the beautiful crafts and the bottles of mezcal. Here I share with you an exceptional, yet not exhaustive, program to spend three days in Oaxaca: Day 1 Our first day in Oaxaca we woke up in our beautiful hotel MACONDO ARTE which I 100% recommend and then had breakfast at El Mayordomo downtown. Then took a tour of Mezcal distilleries and tasting class with Toño from MEZCAL TOUR OAXACA (find them on IG @mwzcaltouroaxaca or send them a text +52 9515839095) His passion for mezcal and knowledge of everything around it is incredible. We learned about the different agaves, a lot about the history of mezcal, the various techniques involved in the distilling process and some of it’s more modern interpretations. For example a Mezcal de Pechuga made with filtered through frog legs and infused with watermelon. Sounds out of this world but it’s actually quite delicious. Our Tour ended having lunch in the pasillo de humo of the Mercado de Tlacolula. It was my first time in that particular Mercado, that actually hosts the original pasillo de humo, and I loved everything about it. Either there or in the Mercado closer to downtown visiting the pasillo de humo is an experience one cannot miss. The afternoon I walked around downtown and did some shopping in some really cool boutiques full of handmade local products. I got a beautiful pair of embroidered tennis shoes, a great agave fibers linen-like dress and a beautiful pair of earrings. For diner we went to Levadura de Olla. Day Two Breakfast at Pan:am. I had the huevos cuicatecos and they were really good. Then visited the archeological site and museum of Montealban and shopped it’s little market. I found some incredible rings and really good prices too. Next we went to the Mercado de Barro of Santa Maria Atzompa where I got some beautiful dishes and a gorgeous barro verde vase. And the afternoon we were back in the city. It rained so I found shelter in La Atoleria and walked around the Museo de la Filatelia where I saw some amazing postal stamps. Later we had a taste of Mezcal in the Mezcaloteca and visited a few art galleries. That evening we had diner at La Quince Letras. Day Three Breakfast at Tierra del Sol. Everything was delicious. The tortillas were out of this world. And the view from the terrace is breathtaking. Then we walked around Santo Domingo for a little while and went back to our hotel to relax by the pool before it was time to head home.
