Friedrich Schleiermacher

This lecture looks at the life and theology of Friedrich Schleiermacher, often called the father of liberal theology. Responding to Enlightenment-era skepticism, Schleiermacher sought to restate the Christian faith in terms that made sense to the modern mind. Drawing from Immanuel Kant, he grounded theology not in revelation or tradition, but in a universal human feeling of absolute dependence—what he called God-consciousness.
