7 Canadian Coffee Brands Canadians MUST AVOID (And 2 That Are Actually Worth It)
Three foreign corporations control nearly half of all coffee sold in Canadian grocery stores. We examined seven of the most popular brands — and found glass in jars, plastic particles in every K-Cup pod, a Canadian icon sold to a Miami corporation for $12.5 billion, and two brands you thought were competing secretly owned by the same American company. A 2024 CFIA recall pulled 549,000 cans of coffee over a botulism risk. A Nescafé espresso recall was issued because jars may have contained pieces of glass — a Class 1 hazard. A 2018 Canadian study found that every K-Cup brand tested released microplastics into the coffee during brewing. Kraft Heinz collected $542 million in Canadian coffee sales in 2024 alone — by selling you Maxwell House from one shelf and Nabob from the shelf beside it as if they were competing brands. Van Houtte, founded in Montreal in 1919, was sold to an American company for $915 million in 2010. Tim Hortons grocery coffee is now controlled by a corporation based in Miami. Seven brands to stop buying. Two Canadian roasters still doing it right. 👉 Subscribe for weekly investigations: / @canadafoodbrief New videos every week. 📋 Chapters 0:00 — Introduction: What Is Actually in Your Cup 1:00 — Before the Brands: Heat-Formed Chemicals, Mold, and a Botulism Recall 2:00 — #7 Folgers 3:30 — #6 Maxwell House 5:00 — #5 Nescafé (Glass Recall and the Instant Coffee Problem) 6:45 — #4 Nabob (The Canadian Brand That Is Not Canadian) 8:15 — #3 Van Houtte and the K-Cup Microplastic Problem 10:30 — #2 Starbucks 12:30 — #1 Tim Hortons Grocery Coffee 14:45 — Three Corporations That Control Canadian Coffee 16:00 — Worth Buying: Kicking Horse Coffee 18:00 — Worth Buying: 49th Parallel Coffee Roasters 19:30 — What to Do With This 👇 Watch these next: → Don't Eat Tim Hortons In Canada Until You Watch This (Always Fresh Is Always Frozen) → 8 Bottled Water Brands Canadians MUST AVOID (And What You Should Be Drinking Instead) → 8 Canadian Bread Brands Canadians MUST AVOID (And The 1 That's Actually Worth It) 📌 Sources: CFIA — Nescafé Espresso Recall (glass contamination): inspection.canada.ca | CFIA — Canned Coffee Botulism Recall 2024: inspection.canada.ca | CFIA — Tim Hortons Chicken Noodle Soup Recall 2024: inspection.canada.ca | Clean Label Project — Coffee Pod Testing: cleanlabelproject.org | Kraft Heinz Canada Revenue Data: kraftheinzcompany.com | Restaurant Brands International — Tim Hortons Acquisition 2014: rbi.com | Keurig Dr Pepper — Canadian Coffee Market: keurigdrpepper.com | Kicking Horse Coffee: kickinghorsecoffe.com | 49th Parallel Coffee Roasters: 49thcoffee.com | Health Canada — Food Recall Database: canada.ca/en/health-canada 📋 Disclaimer This video is produced for educational and informational purposes only.
