The most striking feature of the Teufel Ultima is the midrange driver, whose bronze-colored diaphragm immediately catches the eye. Exceptional for its price range, the speaker features a Kevlar diaphragm and a phase plug. The tweeter also boasts a striking design, positioned behind a waveguide. Fiberglass woofers are another rarity in this price bracket. Affordable and with plenty of bass. Sonically, this budget speaker plays in a very popular league, offering strong bass and pronounced treble, likely due to the tweeter's waveguide. Many appreciate the powerful bass, but it's not for everyone; the Teufel Ultima 40 isn't exactly known for its linear sound signature. Nevertheless, it's a lot of fun to listen to at first (with the right music). The speaker readily devours bass-heavy music, especially when fed by an amplifier, delivering a room-filling experience. However, if the bass is more pronounced in the upper bass range, the sound quickly becomes thin, a characteristic other speakers handle better. For movies or gaming, the speaker truly shines, showcasing the deep bass and treble to great effect, making every sound easily localized. The measured maximum volume of 108.7 dB(C) / 1m is also quite respectable. In the review video, I take a closer look at the 3-way speaker. I'll be comparing the Teufel Ultima 40 Mk3 in a sound check against the Numan Reference 801, which is in a similar price range. A bass test is also included.
