Who can still use the word "avant-garde" or the expression "being avant-garde" without betraying a derisive smile? Is "avant-garde" a word that belongs to the archaeology of culture, as if we were speaking of the Phoenicians who bequeathed us the letters of the alphabet or the Egyptians who handed down numerical proportions? Or is it a word that, living as it does, in the common usage of our language, designates something still alive and active, even if it be in the name of utopian or vaguely dreamy aspirations?
