#09 Greek Mythology Explained — The Day Zeus Lost

Typhon — the last and most terrifying child of the Earth — did what no Titan and no Giant ever could: he beat Zeus. In this episode, the king of the gods faces his most dangerous enemy alone, and loses. After the Titans were chained and the Giants buried, Gaia mated with Tartarus and bore one final monster in the caves of Cilicia — a creature taller than the mountains, with a hundred dragon-heads and fire for eyes. When Typhon stormed Olympus, the gods didn't fight back. They fled to Egypt and hid as animals — Apollo as a hawk, Hermes as an ibis, Hera as a white cow. Only Zeus turned back to face the monster alone. He drove Typhon back with thunderbolts, but when he closed for hand-to-hand combat at Mount Casius, the monster seized him, wrenched away his sickle, and cut the sinews from Zeus's hands and feet. The king of the gods was crippled and imprisoned in the Corycian cave — and for one terrible interval, the throne of heaven stood empty. It was Hermes the trickster and the goat-god Aegipan who crept past the dragon Delphyne and stole the sinews back. Restored, Zeus hunted Typhon across the world — from the Fates' trick at Mount Nysa to the blood-soaked slopes of Mount Haemus — and finally buried the monster under Mount Etna, where his fire still burns.
