After the fall of Baghdad in July 2003, four CNI agents joined the Spanish contingent of the Plus Ultra International Brigade with the mission of protecting the troops from potential threats. Among them was Alberto Martínez, who returned to the country thanks to his extensive prior experience, and Carlos Baró, Alfonso Vega, and Ignacio Zanón also joined. Following the invasion by the US and British armies, Iraq was devastated and plunged into poverty. Saddam Hussein's regime had been dismantled, and its citizens, far from feeling liberated, began to live under the threat of a foreign power, while insurgent groups began to organize. Attacks against coalition targets began to claim the first civilian victims, and on October 9, José Antonio Bernal, the security and intelligence attaché in Baghdad, was assassinated at his doorstep. The ambush of the CNI agents took place on November 29, 2003, just forty days after Bernal's assassination. An internal investigation was then ordered by the National Intelligence Center (CNI), and several arrests were made by the coalition forces.
