The 'Impossible' British Recovery Tank That Waded Nine Feet Into D-Day Surf And Saved The Beaches

At Omaha Beach, 2,400 Americans died. At Gold Beach, the British lost a fraction of that. One unarmed Sherman tank made the difference. The Sherman BARV — Beach Armoured Recovery Vehicle — waded 9 feet deep into the D-Day surf with no gun, no turret, and a combat diver on the crew. Built in secret by REME and wrongly forgotten as one of Hobart's Funnies, around 52 BARVs hit Gold, Juno, and Sword beaches on June 6, 1944. They dragged drowned tanks out of the water, shoved stranded landing craft back to sea, and kept the beach lanes open under direct fire. The Americans had nothing like it. Bradley later admitted he should have taken them. The untold story of D-Day's most important machine is here. If this channel covers the wars others skip, subscribe.
