Paul Deisling, an expert in stone restoration, explains the available methods: “There are two different restoration methods. For hairline cracks and light soiling, cleaning grinding is suitable. This method requires three grinding and polishing processes. More complex and expensive is surface grinding, which requires up to eight steps. Surface grinding can even out larger irregularities. Both methods are performed as wet grinding. A sealant is always applied as a final step. This closes the pores and protects against water and the accumulation of new dirt. Then the surface is shiny again.” Surface treatment is a crucial step in restoring the luster of a stone staircase. Depending on the materials, the surfaces can be ground, polished, and sealed.
