Dr. Michel Palheta will address all these questions in this live stream. What are fibroids? Fibroids are benign uterine tumors formed by muscle tissue. They mainly affect women during their reproductive years—when they menstruate and can become pregnant. The cause is unknown, but it is known that their growth depends on hormonal factors, decreasing in size after menopause. They can be single or multiple, ranging from very small to enormous. What are the symptoms of fibroids? The vast majority of fibroids cause no symptoms, however, some cause increased menstrual flow, often with clots, which can result in anemia. Another important symptom is an increase in abdominal volume. Sometimes, thin women appear pregnant due to the enlarged abdomen caused by the growth of the fibroid; pelvic pain is another common symptom; some compressive symptoms may occur, such as increased urinary frequency, urinary retention, constipation, and compression of the pelvic vessels, causing varicose veins and leg swelling. In a very small proportion, fibroids can cause infertility. Fibroids can occupy any position in the uterus, and the closer they grow to the central part, the greater the likelihood of causing bleeding and complicating pregnancy, leading to miscarriage. How are fibroids diagnosed? Diagnosis can be made through a physical examination, but a transvaginal pelvic ultrasound confirms the diagnosis and rules out other pathologies. What is the treatment? Treatment should be individualized, depending on the presence or absence of significant symptoms and the patient's age. Management should monitor the growth of the fibroid. Treatment can be medication or surgical: myomectomy (removal of only the fibroid) or hysterectomy (removal of the entire uterus).
