Which habits truly make you happier—and which are just hyped? In this video, I've compiled 17 popular happiness strategies and scientifically examined them based on over 2,000 psychological studies. Each strategy is ranked on a six-level scale: from ineffective to strongest evidence. These include gratitude journals, exposure to nature, positive affirmations, cold showers, meditation, breathwork, sleep, journaling, social connections, nutrition, supplements, prosocial behavior, cognitive reframing, and exercise. The results are partly surprising: Some of the most popular recommendations from social media and self-help books fare poorly in controlled studies, while other underestimated habits show surprisingly strong effects. Ultimately, the research also reveals which combination of habits has the greatest potential. Strategies not included in the video and why: Strengths-based interventions (e.g., using VIA signature strengths): The evidence is mixed—some studies find small effects, others do not, and methodological quality varies considerably. Flow training: An interesting concept, but there are hardly any controlled intervention studies in healthy adults—most research is correlational. Savoring (consciously enjoying positive experiences): A promising approach, but the intervention studies are still too few and too small to justify a reliable assessment. ...
