The boxy 2024 Hyundai Kona looks more rugged than it actually is, as this subcompact SUV is designed for the urban jungle, not muddy two-wheelers. The 2024 Kona is roomier than the last-generation model, largely thanks to a longer wheelbase and thinner front seatbacks, which create more headroom for rear-seat drivers. The Kona has been completely redesigned for the 2024 model year and has a more modern appearance. The cabin has also been improved, featuring more technology and a fresh design. Since the SE and SEL models come with the base transmission, we'd pay more to upgrade to the N Line, which is equipped with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. In addition to the upgraded engine, the N Line also comes equipped with all the features included in the optional Convenience Package for the SEL, which includes a 12.3-inch infotainment display, a separate 12.3-inch digital display, heated front seats, wireless smartphone charging, integrated Wi-Fi, adaptive cruise control with lane centering, and more. Both of the previous-generation Kona's four-cylinder engines carry over to the 2024 model. The entry-level offering will be a 2.0-liter engine producing 147 hp; a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine producing 190 hp. An eight-speed automatic transmission is available as an option. In its last generation, the Kona with the 2.0-liter engine posted a rather slow 0-60 mph acceleration time of 9.2 seconds. The Turbo was significantly more energetic, reaching 60 mph in 7.3 seconds. We believe the new Kona will offer slightly better performance with the base engine, but will likely be a bit slower with the optional turbocharger, given that it features an eight-speed automatic transmission rather than the previous generation's seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Handling remains quite good despite the Kona's dramatic growth, but the larger second-generation model has lost some of its on-road charm.
