BOSS Pedal switching circuit analysis and modification. Forcing it to turn off when plugged in.

Why does my BOSS Pedal turn on when I plug it in? Some BOSS Pedals turn on when first plugged in and some remain off until you step on the foot switch. In this video we will examine the circuit to see why that is and then we will attempt to modify it so the pedal is always OFF when you plug it in or put a battery in it. UPDATE: May 29 2025 There’s an error in the voltage calculation at around 3:10 . I mistakenly stated the voltage across a resistor in parallel with the base-emitter junction of a transistor as 2.4V. In reality, that voltage will be clamped at around 0.7V due to the forward-biased base-emitter junction. Thanks to @steliosposeidon6871 for pointing this out! I’ll be redoing this video soon with better sound quality and updated info. Thanks for watching and helping make the content better! This the first video episode in a series I will be calling "Irregular Mods". Where I will be modifying various electronic equipment and gear to change its behavior. Some mods will be normal and calculated but most will be strange, pure luck, unconventional, off the wall, hit-or-miss, willy-nilly and IRREGULAR.
