Walmer Walk: Town Centre & Beach【4K】

Located in the county of Kent, and around seven miles northeast of Dover, is the town of Walmer. The town's name is derived from Old English 'walh' and 'mere', meaning 'pool of the Britons' ('walh' is also the origin of 'Wales'). It is believed to have been the landing point of Julius Caesar in circa 55 BC during his short-lived invasion of Britain, although other landing places are hypothesised. In 1538 France formed an allegiance with the Holy Roman Empire. This posed a threat to England, so as a countermeasure, Henry VIII ordered the construction of three castles in close proximity along the Kent coast, namely Sandown, Deal and Walmer. The latter is situated about a mile south of the town centre. These castles not only defended the coastline, but provided a safe anchorage for ships. In 1856 Walmer Lifeboat Station was established. To this day its crews have received 28 awards for gallantry. In 1940 one of its lifeboats formed part of flotilla of little ships which took part in the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from Dunkirk. In 1881 the railway arrived in Walmer, although the neighbouring town of Deal to the north has had a station since 1847, and provides arguably easier access to Walmer town centre being just under a mile away. Direct high speed trains from both Walmer and Deal to London are available, reaching St Pancras Station in just over 80 minutes.
