Final jobs on the prewar Austin 7 Racer 'nuts and bolts'

part 31 of the 1937 Austin/Crosley single-seater build, and the push is on—next stop, Beaulieu Autojumble, where I’ll be exhibiting the car. bit of a short week this week but I’m into the final finishing stages. I work on the rear axle, complete the last of the welding, and bolt up the wheel bearings for the first time. I also swap in mild steel nuts and bolts throughout so they’ll weather and blend in with the car’s rat rod style. To help the freshly worked metal match the older surfaces, I apply a salt and vinegar wash to bring on a bit of surface rust and tie everything together visually. The exhaust is fitted and “tuned” by ear for length and sound, and I install a vintage lathe oiler to keep the chains lubricated.
