Clinician-Parent Relationship: Effective Practices for Supporting Parent Engagement & Communication
Parents are the “experts” in their children and play a key role in the experiences and development of their children. This presentation will discuss the importance of parent involvement in child and adolescent service provisions. Factors impacting parental engagement and motivation will also be discussed. Attendees will be provided strategies for increasing parental motivation, engagement, and communication. Learning Statement: At the conclusion of this presentation, attendees should be able to describe the importance of parental involvement in mental health services of children and adolescents as well as factors influencing parental engagement. Attendees will learn how to support clinician-parent alliances by implementing strategies to increase parental motivation, engagement, and communication. Learning Objectives: • Identify factors influencing parent involvement and motivation • Describe outcomes associated with increased parental involvement in service provisions • Identify strategies for supporting parental engagement and communication as a clinician About the presenter: Kandice Benallie, Ph.D., is a psychology postdoctoral fellow at UCEBT. Dr. Benallie completed her doctoral degree in psychology at Utah State University and an APA-accredited internship at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital. She has extensive training in child clinical psychology, specifically in areas of diagnostic testing and treatment of children with neurodevelopmental disorders and behavior concerns. Dr. Benallie has a particular interest in parent and family involvement in psychological testing and treatment of their children. Program Notices: Conflicts of Interest: None.
