Along with thousands of other Allies, he was tasked with capturing the bridge at Arnhem so that the advancing liberation army could push through from the south to the north, with the ultimate goal of liberating the Netherlands by Christmas. But Market Garden, as the world's largest airborne operation was known, was not the success everyone had hoped for. The war continued until May 1945.
