Naturally blending seamlessly with the rice paddies, the owners of this home are a mother who has guarded this place for over 50 years and her youngest son, who built the house for her. When the old Hanok could no longer withstand the weight of time, the son made a decision: to build a new house so his mother could spend the rest of her life safely and comfortably! Upon opening the front door, a spacious living room unfolds, highlighting its heavy timber frame structure. The floor-to-ceiling windows, which frame the scenery like a picture, are the highlight of this house! However, the scale seems quite large for a mother living alone... This holds a deep meaning for the son. It is for his mother, who has lived in a spacious Hanok ever since her husband passed away over 20 years ago. He says he maintained a similar size to the previous house to preserve the familiar scale of her life. My mother started her life in Seoul around the age of twenty after marrying through an arranged marriage. However, upon moving down to Paju, she began a life as a farmer that she had never anticipated. Having raised three children, she has now spent 50 years there; what she thought would be a temporary stay in the countryside has become a home more familiar than her hometown. In the new house she has found at the end of all this time, she says that simply walking around the spacious house is exercise, and gazing at the scenery beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows brings her joy. For my mother, who has dedicated her life to her family for so long, her son’s thoughtful consideration is evident throughout the house. To ensure she will not experience any inconvenience even if she eventually uses a wheelchair, all door thresholds were removed, and the hallways were made generously wide. The bathroom, her only request, was designed to be a custom-made space for her! Even the height of the sink and mirror were adjusted to her eye level. To lighten the burden of maintenance, the vegetable garden was also laid down with weed-prevention mats and created as an upright garden that does not require bending over. In a sense, her son’s profound filial piety is infused into every corner of the house. The son, whose hometown is here, says that tending to the wood brought from the old house and tending to the garden is a great joy. Above all, he says that whenever he sees his mother living comfortably in the new house, he feels that building this house was truly the right decision.
