The Way of St. James (Spanish: Camino de Santiago) is a vast network of pilgrimage and hiking trails across Europe, all leading to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, northwest Spain, where the relics of St. James, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, are enshrined. The most prominent routes are: 1. The French Route (Camino Francés), which I am walking today. This is the most famous and popular route, starting from Saint-Jean-Pey-de-Bour in southern France and crossing the Pyrenees Mountains for approximately 800 kilometers to the cathedral. 2. The Northern Route (Camino del Norte): This runs along Spain's Atlantic coast and is characterized by its stunning scenery and more rugged terrain. 3. The Original Route (Camino Primitivo): This is the oldest route taken by pilgrims, starting from Oviedo. 4. The Portuguese Route: This route begins either in Lisbon, the capital city, or in Porto, in northern Portugal. This route also has several paths, some passing through the mountains and others following a relatively easy coastal road. In addition to other routes such as the English Route and the Madrid Route... The purpose of the Camino is to combine a spiritual journey, a physical challenge, and the enjoyment of breathtaking nature. The route is distinguished by the presence of signs and markers along the paths (such as yellow arrows and the historical oyster shell symbol) to guide pilgrims. At the end, the pilgrim receives an official certificate from the Catholic Church if they complete at least 100 kilometers on foot or 200 kilometers by bicycle.
