Boston-Malatya bilim hattı 33 hastaya şifa oldu I Karaciğer nakilleri başarıyla gerçekleşti
Thirty-three patients have recovered from liver transplants at İnönü University Turgut Özal Medical Center in Malatya, where they used a donor matching system using algorithms and computer software developed by Turkish scientists Prof. Dr. Tayfun Sönmez and Prof. Dr. Utku Ünver, both of whom work at Boston College in the US. Prof. Dr. Sezai Yılmaz, Director of the Liver Transplant Institute at İnönü University Turgut Özal Medical Center, told an Anadolu Agency (AA) reporter that cadaveric organ donations are extremely scarce, and therefore patients seeking liver transplants are bound to find a donor. Yılmaz noted that their institute has performed over 3,500 transplants to date, noting that 85 percent of these transplants are from living donors and 15 percent from cadavers. Yılmaz explained that only 30-40% of living donors are compatible with the patient, and that even those who are incompatible with their own patients can be compatible with others. He explained that cross-transplantation is performed by exchanging donors, and both patients are able to recover. In 2019, they performed five liver transplants simultaneously, and following this surgery, Prof. Dr. Yılmaz, noting that Sönmez came to their hospital and they decided to implement the system they developed here, said: "The multiple crossover liver transplantation system was developed by Prof. Dr. Tayfun Sönmez and Prof. Dr. Utku Ünver. Tayfun Sönmez named this model the 'Banu Bedestenci Sönmez Crossover Liver Transplant System' after his late wife. It's a very advanced system. In my opinion, it's one of the most important mathematical models in the world. It matches patients waiting in a pool, but it involves multiple crossover transplants rather than binary ones. Of course, when multiple crossover liver transplants are mentioned, Malatya comes to mind. Economics professors at Boston College actually thought, 'Could we implement this model in other countries?' They went to Korea and conducted some studies there, but when they heard that such a multiple liver transplant had been performed in Malatya, Tayfun Sönmez came from the United States to Malatya. He explained that we could do it here, and we held meetings and conferences. Ultimately, we decided to implement this system here. This is very rare in other parts of the world." Triple-crossover liver transplants have been performed. A triple-crossover liver transplant has been performed once in India and Pakistan. However, in Malatya, three triple-crossover liver transplants and numerous quadruple-crossover liver transplants were performed. With multiple crossover liver transplants, you can offer at least the chance of organ transplantation to more people.
