DIFFUSION RAMAN

This video deals with inelastic scattering, and more specifically, Raman scattering. We follow the historical approach, beginning with the classical interpretation of the radiation from an oscillating dipole. We will then examine the three scattering terms: elastic Rayleigh scattering and inelastic Stokes and anti-Stokes scattering. We present the importance of the polarizability tensor in explaining the deformation of the electron cloud of a bond under the influence of an exciting electric field. The quantum approach, using Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics, is necessary to classify the intensity of the three types of scattering. A review of spectroscopic quantities is provided at the end of the video.
