Navy SARCs and Army Special Forces 18D’s are arguably the U.S. military’s two most capable Special Operations medic communities. Both are trained to practice some of the best medicine out there in a special operations setting. SARC stands for Special Amphibious Reconnaissance Corpsman, and the official title of an 18D is a Special Forces Medical Sergeant. These two communities, while fundamentally different in their mission sets, receive the same medical training side by side at the Special Operations Combat Medic Course (SOCM) and Special Forces Medical Sergeant Course (SFMS). They’re both pretty darn close to being a Physician’s Assistant.
