Spanning roughly 3,180 kilometers, it originates in the Tibetan Plateau, flows through the disputed Kashmir region via Ladakh (Indian-administered) and Gilgit-Baltistan, and travels the entire length of Pakistan before emptying into the Arabian Sea near Karachi. Length: 3,180 km (1,980 miles). Source: Southwestern Tibet Autonomous Region of China (near Mount Kailash). Mouth: The Arabian Sea, near Karachi, Pakistan. Annual Flow: ~243 cubic kilometers (twice the volume of the Nile). The Indus River Basin & Economy Agricultural Lifeline: The river is the primary water source for Pakistan's agricultural sector. Together with its five major eastern tributaries (the Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej), it supports one of the world's largest interconnected irrigation networks, sustaining over 200 million people. Hydroelectric Power: The river's flow is heavily harnessed for energy. Major infrastructure, such as the Tarbela Dam in Pakistan, helps control seasonal floods and generates large amounts of electricity. Geopolitics & The Indus Waters Treaty The allocation and management of the river system are governed by the Indus Waters Treaty brokered by the World Bank in 1960.Under this agreement, the eastern rivers (Ravi, Beas, Sutlej) are largely allocated to India, while the western rivers (Indus, Jhelum, Chenab) are primarily allocated to Pakistan. Water usage, dam construction and resource management remain focal points of diplomatic relations in the region. Historical & Ecological Significance Cradle of Civilization: The river valley is home to the ancient Indus Valley Civilization, one of the world's earliest urban societies, dating back to around 2500 BCE. Environmental Challenges: Upstream water management and climate variations have reduced freshwater and sediment flow into the river delta. This has caused shrinkage of coastal mangrove forests, leading to environmental degradation and saltwater intrusion into previously fertile lands.
