The federal government's strategy is clear: Since wind turbines, like new reservoirs, are facing resistance, solar power in particular should fill the resulting gaps. "Einstein" asks: How can this be achieved? In a country often shrouded in fog, especially in winter? A recent federal study shows that if all reasonably usable roof and facade surfaces were covered with solar panels, they could generate more electricity than Switzerland consumes. However, solar panels aren't for everyone. And they're considered an expensive investment. A visit to the European Record House in Gerzensee near Bern shows, however, that solar houses can look better than some standard houses and, over their entire lifespan, are even cheaper. The European Record House, nota bene, produces seven times more electricity than it consumes. Thanks to Swiss research, solar panels are now barely recognizable as such. And they will become significantly more efficient in the future. Adventurer Raphaël Domjan demonstrates what is possible with Swiss technology. He wants to fly to the record altitude of 25,000 meters using solar power alone, demonstrating that solar energy also has a future in aviation. "Einstein" is already taking a wild ride in the record-breaking aircraft's simulator. But what do you do when clouds hang in front of the sun for days? Or where does the electricity come from at night? Not all problems have been solved yet. But here too, Swiss researchers have new approaches, for example, with batteries that can no longer explode.
