(14 Apr 1960) The Rand Easter Show at Johannesburg, at which many nations were exhibiting, marked the 50th year of the Union of South Africa. The Prime Minister, Dr Verwoerd, who came to open it, was making his first public appearance since the state of emergency had been declared. ® Dr Verwoerd made a thorough tour of the exhibition, and addressed the crowd of 30,000. It was after his speech, that the attempt on his life has made. The Prime Minister was shot in the face at point blank range. The assailant's name was later given as David Pratt.
