Sleep 101: How to Help your Therapy Clients Achieve Quality Sleep
Are you a therapist but haven't been formally trained in how to manage sleep health? I'm sure your clients voice that they struggle with sleep or haven't been sleeping well, especially if they have stress or anxiety. Of course, sleep hygiene is one google search away, but there's more to consider. Let's talk about how to help your clients prioritize quality sleep. This is not intended to be a replacement for the traditional Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) protocol. This is a basic overview of sleep health, notably: sleep drive, circadian rhythm, and arousal as it relates to initiating or maintaining sleep. We're talking about the basics here. If your client's primary concern is insomnia, it may be helpful to use the protocol in full capacity rather than focus on small parts of sleep health.
