The Monument to Spain, on the Costanera Sur riverfront, has become a makeshift shelter for homeless people. They live off the charity of others, but often have to eat scraps they find in the garbage. Some have been there for more than five months. In addition to the exposure to the elements and abandonment, they face insecurity: they report constant robberies. To survive, they beg at traffic lights and wash the clothes of truck drivers waiting to enter the port. They dream of leaving the streets and starting over.
