"Keep Her Alive Long Enough for Technology to Catch Up" | Hanna Bauer on Love, Leadership, and AI
www.heartnomics.com / bauerhanna / @heartnomics / heartnomics / hannad.bauer Hanna Bauer spent much of her childhood in a coronary care unit, unable to attend school, unable to play, waiting. She had her first heart attack at ten. A second followed two weeks later. The open heart surgery failed. What kept her alive, she now understands, was not medication or monitors. It was love, and the decision of a surgical team to attempt something no one had ever done. Twenty years later, a hospital documentary reunion gave her one sentence that became the foundation of everything she now teaches. Her surgeon, asked what he had been thinking during that experimental procedure, said simply: "We were just trying to keep her alive long enough for technology to catch up." Hanna is a transformational leadership strategist, black belt in Six Sigma, and founder of Heartnomics, a philosophy and practice built on the conviction that there is a genuine return on investment to leading with love, not in place of excellence, but as the very condition that makes excellence sustainable. In this conversation for Empathy Unbound, Hanna and Andrew explore why 70% of digital transformations fail, and why it is never the technology's fault; why AI amplifies dysfunction just as readily as it amplifies performance; what it means to protect the vital parts of an organisation before injecting new technology; and why empathy is always downstream of love. They also dig into what burnout shares with heart disease; the triage logic she brings to struggling organisations; her BEAD and CORE frameworks for internal and organisational alignment; and the difference between success, which happens to you, and significance, which happens through you. TIMESTAMPS 00:00 Introduction and Hanna's background 01:00 A childhood inside the bubble: heart disease from age four 02:00 Two heart attacks at ten, and the open heart surgery that failed 04:00 Learning to read faces when you cannot breathe 05:00 Making the world a classroom from a hospital bed 06:00 An experimental surgery that had never been done before 07:00 The documentary, the reunion, and the sentence that changed everything 08:00 3,000 other children saved by the surgery that saved her 09:00 Parents who left careers and status behind to save one child 11:00 Coming out of hospital and learning to be human 12:00 Catching up: AP classes, university scholarship, Senate president, CNN internships 14:00 Technology surrounded her; the people who gave her humanity are what she remembers 15:00 What Heartnomics means: heart plus economics, love plus excellence 17:00 Why love is not a soft skill and why empathy is downstream of it 19:00 Sales, marketing, and emotion: the exchange that was always happening 20:00 You cannot give what you do not have: internal alignment for external execution 22:00 "We were just trying to keep her alive long enough for technology to catch up" 23:00 What actually kept her alive was love, not medication 25:00 How organisations find Hanna: communication breakdown, high turnover, profit leakage 27:00 Six Sigma, eliminating waste, and applying triage thinking to business 29:00 Identifying the vital functions before anything else 30:00 Why 70% of digital transformations fail and it is never the technology's fault 32:00 The mistake Hanna made herself: leading by process while neglecting people 33:00 When your best person quits for a lesser-paying job just to get their life back 34:00 AI amplifies everything, including the dysfunction you already have 37:00 The death of print, the publishing disruption, and what it teaches us about AI adoption 38:00 Know your vital parts before you inject new technology: the ablation parallel 40:00 Leaders cannot leave their personal lives at the door 41:00 Work-life balance is a myth: adaptability and agility instead 43:00 The BEAD method (developed in a hospital bed) and the CORE method 44:00 Adapt, do not just adopt: the difference matters 45:00 Culture is the way we think, act, and interact 46:00 Where culture actually comes from and who really sets it 48:00 Mission statements on walls versus alignment people can actually use 49:00 Burnout feels exactly like heart disease: the statistics behind the crisis 51:00 Becoming your own monitor: defending energy, time, and purpose 54:00 Five children and what she has and has not been able to give them 57:00 Empathy without shared experience: finding the right people to fill the gaps 59:00 Success versus significance: John Maxwell's framing and what it means to her 01:00:00 Significance is what happens through you, not to you
