1974 Progressive Psychedelic Rock — The Common Hours: The Night Was Declared Obsolete [Full Album]

Full 1974 progressive psychedelic rock album with male and female vocals, Fender Rhodes, Hammond organ, Mellotron, analog synthesizers, melodic bass, dry drums, tremolo guitar, tenor saxophone, tape loops, electrical field recordings and unstable sixteen-track analog production. The Night Was Declared Obsolete is a complete fictional concept album by The Common Hours, created for listeners drawn to progressive rock, art rock, vintage psychedelia, private-press records, electronic experimentation and long-form analog journeys. A city without darkness. A government that regulates sleep. One window that refuses to shine. The Night Was Declared Obsolete unfolds across six connected pieces set in a European industrial city that has officially abolished the night. Municipal authorities install a permanent lighting system designed to increase productivity, extend working hours and eliminate the supposed disorder of darkness. Streets remain illuminated. Factories never close. Citizens are instructed to stay awake, keep their curtains open and report neighbors who continue to dream. As the artificial morning expands, private life begins to collapse. Windows reveal only illuminated interiors. Hospital patients lose track of days. Government departments classify shadows as technical faults. When the electrical grid finally fails, the city encounters darkness as if it were an unknown country. A recurring five-note motif — E, B, D, C-sharp and A — moves through the album as an electrical control signal. It first appears on Fender Rhodes, becomes a mechanical bass instruction, hides inside vocal harmonies, accelerates through overloaded synthesizers and returns incomplete after the blackout. Fender Rhodes, Hammond organ, restrained Mellotron, acoustic piano, Minimoog, EMS-style synthesizer, melodic electric bass, dry drums, prepared piano, tremolo guitar, tenor saxophone, vibraphone, relay switches, fluorescent hum, municipal announcements and tape-spliced voices move through asymmetric structures shaped by missing beats, voltage drops, manual edits and unresolved transitions. No digital perfection. No progressive-metal spectacle. No cinematic retrofuturism. Only saturated tape, unstable electricity, human timing and the sound of a city discovering that darkness was never the enemy.
