SAJPA - Expungement — Amendment to the Criminal Records (Rehabilitation of Offenders) Act
Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Director of Legal Education Ms. Julia Wedderburn delivered an informative presentation on Expungement: Amendment to the Criminal Records (Rehabilitation of Offenders) Act. The amendment to the Act represents a significant development in Jamaican law. Expungement — the legal process by which certain criminal records may be cleared — has life-changing implications for many Jamaicans, affecting their ability to access employment, housing, education and more. Ms Wedderburn walked through the important amendments to the Criminal Records (Rehabilitation of Offenders) Act and what they mean in practice. The presentation was a part of the St Andrew Justice of the Peace Association’s ongoing Sensitisation Series — short, focused and impactful online meetings designed to keep members informed on matters of direct relevance to the work they do every day.
