He was in his early forties, almost completely deaf, isolated socially, and trapped in a relentless struggle against illness, loneliness, and despair. Friends described him wandering the countryside with sketchbooks full of musical ideas, shouting because he could no longer hear his own voice. Yet somehow, amid this darkness, Beethoven created music overflowing with life, power, and transcendent beauty. Of all the treasures within the symphonic literature, the Allegretto stands apart—a movement so profound that audiences at its 1813 premiere one newspaper reported, the “applause rose to the point of ecstasy.” More than two centuries later, it remains one of the most revered creations in all of classical music and one of the most powerful ways to help a young musician LOVE music MORE. The Allegretto unfolds like a solemn procession beginning with the A-minor woodwind chord that bookends the movement. Its determined march hints at Beethoven's own inner strength -- always confident that the power that lies within will always overcome the obstacle that lies ahead. Layer upon layer, Beethoven builds a world of dignity, faith, and perseverance in the face of the insurmountable. It has been described as humanity's voice pressing forward through suffering -- our inspiration for naming our album "The Cadence of Grace." This is one of the first recordings by our Salt Lake City Lyceum campus. This orchestra is made up of high school students and is only in its 4th year.
