"Outlining" is a process from the Abby Whiteside school of pedagogy that allows a pianist to start playing fast pieces at the appropriate tempo instead of practicing them at slower tempos and gradually increasing the speed. Through outlining, pianists can immediately access the appropriate muscle groups for the piece and teach themselves to hear phrases instead of simply hearing individual notes.
