We Threw MILLIONS of Oranges 🍊 | Carnevale di Ivrea

Is this Europe's craziest festival? Come with us to Ivrea’s Battle of the Oranges (Battaglia delle Arance)! 🍊 Held every year on the weekend before Ash Wednesday, the Carnevale di Ivrea got its start in Medieval times. The orange throwing is a recent addition, starting in the 1950’s. Nine teams compete to take down the evil rulers who are carried around the carnivale in horse-drawn carriages. You’ll need to sign up for a team ahead of time to participate in the bulk of the orange throwing. Spectators wear red hats, also known as Phrygian hats, to indicate that you’re not a target. Legend has it that an evil tyrant ruled the town of Ivrea, enacting the primae noctis on all women on their wedding night. Fed up with his cruel acts, the Miller’s daughter beheaded him on her own wedding night. This was unexpectedly one of our favorite travel experiences we’ve ever had. The energy is electric, there are few other “tourists” around, and the town of Ivrea is simply beautiful. Ivrea is very easily reached from Torino.
