Spreadsheet for sizing a septic tank, filter, and soakaway: https://planilhasengenharia.com/plani... In this video, you will learn how to size a soakaway, following the prescriptions of NBR 13969 of 1997, which is the Brazilian standard that guides the design, construction, and operation of this type of liquid effluent final disposal unit. Initially, a brief presentation of what a soakaway is and how it works is given. The soakaway is the unit for purification and final disposal of effluents coming from the anaerobic filter or directly from the septic tank, when the filter is not used. The absence of a slab at the bottom and the presence of holes in the walls of the soakaway allows the effluents to infiltrate the soil both from the bottom and the sides. Generally, a layer of crushed stone at least 30cm thick is placed at the bottom of the soakaway pit to aid in the infiltration of effluent. In general, any material can be used in the construction of the septic tank, filter, and soakaway pit, provided they have adequate mechanical strength to withstand the stresses to which they may be subjected. In addition, they must also be resistant to chemical attack from substances contained in the sewage or generated in the sewage digestion process. The most commonly used materials are masonry blocks, precast concrete rings, and plastic. As mentioned earlier, the infiltration of effluent into the soil occurs from the bottom and sides of the soakaway pit. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the required infiltration area. To do this, it is first necessary to determine the total daily volume of sewage, the soil percolation rate, and the maximum daily application rate. The total daily volume of sewage is calculated by multiplying the number of occupants in the building by the contribution of wastewater, obtained from Table 3 of NBR 13969 of 1997 or Table 1 of NBR 7229 of 1993. The soil percolation rate is obtained through a test described in Annex A of NBR 13969 of 1997. Another equivalent method can also be used, such as the percolation test present in the FUNASA sanitation manual. More information about these tests will be presented in another video. Once the soil percolation rate is obtained, the maximum daily application rate can be found in Table A.1 of NBR 13969 of 1997; however, this table only presents some values. Discrete values for the percolation rate Transferring the data from this table to Excel, it is possible to generate a graph and obtain a function that relates the variables in this graph. For this, an Excel tool called trendline is used. With this function, it is possible to estimate values for the maximum daily application rate from percolation rate values that are not present in Table A.1. The maximum daily application rate represents the maximum daily volume of sewage, in cubic meters, that each square meter of soil can absorb. Therefore, it is possible to obtain the necessary infiltration area of the soakaway by dividing the total daily sewage volume by the maximum daily application rate. The next step is to define the diameter and useful height of the soakaway so that the adopted infiltration area is greater than or equal to the necessary infiltration area.
