How do we heal from racism when our society is sick? That question was at the center of our latest live event with Dr. Bahia Cross Overton, executive director of the Black Parent Initiative, and Dr. Joy DeGruy, the renowned scholar behind “Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome.” Inspired by Word In Black’s new racial healing survey of nearly 700 Black adults, the discussion delved into how many in our community feel exhausted by racism — but are also searching for ways to restore themselves, their families, and their communities. But racial healing — through restoring individuals and communities, repairing the damage caused by racism, and transforming societal structures — is not impossible. And it could be the key to Black America’s survival.
