I hate red oak. That pinkish hue compared to glorious white oak. That coarse open grain that eats sandpaper and can turn almost any finish splotchy. The wet dog smell when you cut into it. It's builder grade lumber with loud cathedral grain that screams 80's/90's kitchen cabinets, and I've spent years avoiding it. So why did I just build an entire desk out of it in a furniture style I don't even like?
