Mr. Jang approached clients with whom he had built long-standing trust, using sweet talk to promise high commissions in exchange for prepaying premiums on their behalf to secure fire insurance renewals for large corporations. He employed a typical "Ponzi scheme" method: initially reassuring them by returning the principal and commissions as promised, he then increased the investment amount. In the process, there are 17 confirmed victims alone, with total damages exceeding 10 billion won, including cases where he lost 1 billion won from the sale of his 90-year-old mother's apartment and drove his lifelong office to the brink of closure. A bigger problem is the irresponsible attitude of the insurance company. The victims had already reported the fraudulent activities to the company by sending certified letters since last summer, but the company distanced itself from the matter, claiming it was an "individual deviation" and a "non-existent product." Even after the damages were reported, Mr. Jang received only a two-week business suspension; during that time, he was selected as an outstanding insurance agent and swindled over 2 billion won from another victim. Experts point out that the insurance company, which fostered trust by providing excessive privileges and space to the "Insurance King" while focusing solely on sales performance, cannot be absolved of responsibility either.
