SHIELD PENETRATION! Roman Pilum VS Shield: Was this the main purpose?

What was the purpose of the Roman pilum (throwing spear, or javelin)? I have always asserted that the primary purpose is to penetrate shields and would the person holding the shield. Here we test how well a pilum penetrates a simulated shield at short range.
