The Passport of Words (Countries & Nationalities) Write this chart on the board for the students to copy. Note that in English, both countries and nationalities always begin with a capital letter: Flag (Bandeira) Country (País) Nationality (Nacionalidade) Translation 🇧🇷 - Brazil Brazilian 🇺🇸 - The United States American 🇯🇵 - Japan 🇿🇦 - South Africa 💡 Pronunciation tip: In English, our country is spelled with a Z (Brazil), and the "i" sound is very strong: Brə-zíl. 🗣️ 2. How to ask and answer? Teach the class that there are two keys to unlocking this conversation. One question is about your place of birth, and the other is about who you are: 🗺️ Asking about COUNTRY: Question: Where are you from? Answer: I am from Brazil. Whiteboard rule: We use FROM before the country name! 👑 Talking about NATIONALITY: Answer: I am Brazilian. Whiteboard rule: We don't use from here! We go straight to the nationality. 🎮 Practical Activities for the Notebook Activity 1: The Passport Control Imagine you work in immigration at an international airport. Complete the dialogues in your notebook with the missing words (FROM or the correct Nationality): Agent: Where are you ___________? Yuki: I am from Japan. I am Japanese. Answer Key: from Agent: Where are you from? John: I am from the United States. I am ___________. Answer Key: American Agent: Where are you from? Thabo: I am from South Africa. I am South African. Answer Key: from Activity 2: Written Connection Rewrite the sentences in your notebook, replacing the country with the correct nationality, following the model: Model: I am from Japan. ➔ I am Japanese. A) I am from Brazil. ➔ ________________________ (Answer Key: I am Brazilian.) B) I am from the United States. ➔ ________________________ (Answer Key: I am American.) C) I am from South Africa. ➔ ________________________ (Answer: I am South African.) 💡 Teaching Tip: The International Reporter Game Before the students open their notebooks, conduct a lively 4-minute conversation activity. Distribute 4 small pieces of paper to the class with simple drawings (or the names) of the flags studied. The teacher starts by holding the microphone (it can be a pen or eraser) and becomes the "Reporter". Go to a student and ask with good intonation: "Where are you from?". The student looks at the piece of paper they received and answers: "I am from Japan!". The teacher celebrates: "Welcome! You are Japanese!". After two rounds, pass the microphone to the students themselves to ask the question to each other.
