In this video, I explain how a narrowband lambda sensor works and how to test it. Lambda sensors allow the engine control unit (ECU) to determine the air/fuel mixture richness for complete combustion. This means that the correct amount of fuel is injected with each load so that all the oxygen present in the combustion chamber is consumed. This is called the ideal or stoichiometric air-fuel ratio, which is 14.7:1 by mass. The ECU compares the measured air/fuel mixture richness using the lambda sensor with the target value in the engine map.
