A “political giant”, a “champion of peace”, one of Ireland's “greatest ever sons”. Leading figures from around the world have been paying tribute to the the Nobel Peace Prize winner and Northern Ireland politician John Hume who has died. He was 83. John Hume played a key role in ending decades of violence in Northern Ireland which killed thousands of people. Tony Blair, who was prime minister when the Good Friday peace agreement was signed, described him as "a visionary who refused to believe the future had to be the same as the past".
