VISWANATHAN Manayangath Subramanian Viswanathan, popularly known as M.S. Viswanathan rose to become a musical legend in his own lifetime. Acclaimed in Tamil as Mellisai Mannar (the King of light music), Viswanathan composed music for over 1200 films in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi, spanning over five • decades. Viswanathan is remembered for his extraordinary talent in orchestration. Born to Subramanian and Narayanikutti in Elappully in Palakkad, Kerala in 1928, Viswanathan had a troubled childhood having lost his father when he was four years old. He could not have proper schooling but was found to be fond of music. He was groomed by Neelakanda Bhagavathar, a well-known musician of the region. He performed on stage shows and acted in a few stage plays before moving to Chennai. He met T.K. Ramamoorthy, who was a violinist and the two started working for C.R.Subbaraman, the well-known Music Director. When Subbaraman died prematurely, Viswanathan and Ramamoorthy completed the work related to Devadas (Telugu and Tamil) and Kadhal in Tamil (Prema in Telugu). It was Viswanathan who composed music for the all-time hit "Ulage Mayam" in Devadas "Jagame Maya" in Telugu). Viswanathan and Ramomoorthy continued to work together to compose music for over 100 films till they parted ways in 1965. The combination of Viswanathan with Kannadasan, a legendary lyricist in Tamil brought out many songs (filmi and non-filmi ) marking a golden period. Viswanathan received many honors during his lifetime including the "Kalaimamani" (a Jewel of Art) and "Kannadasan Award," both from the Government of Tamil Nadu. He was conferred with an honorary Doctorate by a few Universities. He set Music for "Neerarum Kadaludutha" the Tamil Nadu State Anthem. He was recognized as a National Artist by All India Radio, a rare honor given to a select few of the top-ranking musicians of India. The present CD is an autobiography of the Late M.S.Viswanathan (MSV) based on a long interview made with him by Shri R. Sudarshan, a Programme Executive of All India Radio at Chennai. MSV talks about his life and work, recollecting and retrieving momentous occasions of his long career.
