How Memories Become Traumatic (And How to Heal Them)
Traumatic memories do not form the same way ordinary memories do. When the brain enters survival mode, the amygdala becomes highly reactive, the hippocampus struggles to organize the experience, and the body stores fragments of images, sensations, and emotions that never get linked into a complete story. This video explains how memories become traumatic, why certain events get “stuck” in the nervous system, and why the body continues reacting long after the danger has passed. You will learn how suppression, avoidance, and rushing through the healing process keep the brain from updating the memory, and why trauma often lives in the body instead of the narrative mind. I also walk through the science behind trauma-focused treatments such as EMDR, Somatic Experiencing, imagery rescripting, TF-CBT, and other evidence-based approaches that help the brain safely revisit and update traumatic memories. Understanding how traumatic memories form is the first step in understanding how to heal them. If you have ever wondered why certain memories still trigger fear, anxiety, or physical symptoms, this video explains what is happening in the brain and how trauma can be processed in a safe, structured way. This content is for educational purposes and is not a substitute for therapy. If you are struggling with trauma, PTSD, or chronic stress responses, reach out to a qualified trauma-informed therapist who can guide you through the healing process. References: 1. van der Kolk, B.
